Valerie Pena
I am a second-year undergraduate student at Columbia University, studying Computer Science. As a proud first-generation, low-income student, I am committed to using my education and experiences to make a positive impact in my community. I currently serve as the webmaster for SACNAS+.
My Story
I was born in Brooklyn, New York, and my parents are from Cuenca, Ecuador. Growing up in a low-income community, I didn’t always have access to the resources I needed, but my parents instilled in me the value of perseverance and the importance of education. As a first-generation student, getting to where I am today has been a big milestone, and I am truly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had.
I joined SACNAS+ because it offered me a space to connect with peers who share similar experiences and challenges. It has become a community where I feel empowered, and I’ve had the privilege of contributing to the club in various ways. I’m passionate about giving back and supporting those who may feel lost or stuck in the world of STEM, especially those who face challenges navigating their academic and professional paths. SACNAS+ is important to me because it provides programs and initiatives that help guide individuals toward success, offering mentorship and resources that empower us to rise together. It’s through this community that we can lift each other up, build resilience, and reach our full potential in STEM.​

Outside of my academic life I love exploring Manhattan, discovering new cafes (especially ones with great matcha for studying!), hanging out with friends/family, and thrifting. I also enjoy being active like skiing, hiking, and ice skating. My family—especially my parents and sister—are my greatest source of motivation, and their support keeps me going every day.
