My Story
I am a first-generation, low-income student from Southern California, and my parents are from Honduras! This past summer I did research at a school back home and focused on diagnosing Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy using non-invasive prenatal testing and next generation sequencing. Biomedical engineering is such a wide field that I do not know exactly the path I want to follow just yet, but I am so excited to really dive deeper into the major this year as a junior.
I joined SACNAS+ because I wanted to find an uplifting space with other underrepresented students in STEM. SACNAS+ has not only provided this community but also advice on school and life, especially through the Big/Little program. As the undergraduate director of student retention, I hope to grow this community I’ve found!
A little more about me is that I love watching tv shows (currently watching Only Murders in the Building), and this summer I started reading more for enjoyment. My favorite book is definitely Six of Crows, so I recommend reading that and its sequel if you haven’t yet! My favorite food is arroz con pollo, but my favorite on-campus treat is definitely a smoothie from Cafe East! Oh, I also work as a tour guide on campus!
